@Wizard Now that's a familar name!
Kamen Rider Amazons/ Amazon Riders Season 1
Note: I typed this from the top of my head and didn't do a proper QC yet, so pls bear with me!!
Oh boy. How fast this series went downhill...
What started out strong ended up being a huge wasted potential!
For those unaware, Kamen Rider Amazons is a darker take on the Kamen Rider series that's released on Amazon's streaming service. So yeah, from that you can tell that its budget won't be as high as a regular Kamen Rider series, which is not necessarily a bad thing 'cause it could mean that the show creators would be forced to take a more creative approach when it comes to effects and whatnot. This really shows in some episodes with its fight choreography and cinematography which is a shame 'cause there weren't much throughout the series .
Visually, this show is pretty dark. Obliviously intentional but I kinda wish some scenes were better lit.
It feels as though the entire series is filmed at the same time of day.
The fault for this is mainly the green filter they placed over their footage which made a number of shots look really flat.
Just feel that with a little more colour correcting (maybe have some complimentary colours in there), and some more proper lighting, this would be fixed.
Story and Character-wise, I wasn't attached to any of them. Most of them lacked any development and when they do get one, it is still too difficult for audience (me) to relate as the show did not do a good job in showing their perspectives.
An example of this is when
Omega visited the "cannibal" cafe to investigate. He felt that the customers/monsters/vermins weren't doing anything wrong as they were just eating to maintain their lifestyles.
YOU MEAN TO SAY BRINGING IN UNWILLING HUMANS AND BUTCHERING THEM FOR CONSUMPTION IS NOT WRONG?! I get that they need to eat to survive but I feel that it is very hypocritical for Omega to say that he wants to protect Vermins and humans at the same time! 'CAUSE HOW CAN YOU DO BOTH?!
Then the show tries to make it very emotional by killing the customers. So I guess we were suppose to care for them too?..
Here's my pitch for this story arc. These vermins visits this cafe to eat. They do not know they were being served humans (and they've never knowingly tasted one before). But they just know that they love the food there. The only one that knows about the human food is the chef/Monster. The motivation for the Chef would remain unchanged (he believes that the Vermins should eat humans to keep them safe from going berserk). Vermins aren't the only one in the cafe too, humans also eat there and they too do not know what meat they are eating. They are all probably lied to as to what meant they are being served. Hence the cafe being knows as the cannibal cafe. 'cause I do not understand why the episode called them cannibals if they weren't cannibalising..
Anyways, since the vermins do not know they were eating human meat, it would make more sense for Omega to see them as innocent. And then would be more emotional to see all of them being exterminated. Why were they exterminated? 'cause they've tasted human meat so there's no guarantee that these people would attack the innocent at one point especially after the cafe is exposed for its crime. So it's kind of like an episode from Torchwood.
Oh and I forgot to mention this, the vermins do not necessariyly need to eat humans, they can have other diets. It's just that ones they do, everything else will taste like crap (Tokyo Ghoul Style)
The music in this is very lacklustre. Only 2 of them were a standout. The ending and Omega's theme. The rest felt like typical eerie music.
The editing is a little weird in this. Flashbacks are inserted as though they were an afterthought. It disrupts the flow of the story. Most of them weren't even flashbacks from an existing scene. They are flashbacks with new information added.
An example would be when Mamoru/Monster/Vermin,One of the good guys, ate the human patties. This was revealed an episode later but in the actual episode, that scene was not here. I just feel that it would've made the show a little cleverer to insert scenes like this is the actual episode and than call back to it later as opposed to reveal them out of nowhere.
The monster this series looks a little cheaper form other series. I don't mean the designs but just how the material look. I'm not sure if it's just me but they look extra rubbery in this.
The Kamen Rider suits however look mighty fine! Really like them!
Overall, I cant say that I enjoy this show that much apart from the beginning episodes. If I were to recommend it, I would just for the fights 'cause they look pretty rad! Might watch Season 2 in hopes of it getting good..
Kinda wished it was a retelling of the original Amazon but set in the modern world. They say they didn't do that 'cause they did not want to alter the current timeline of Kamen Riders but I say BULLSHIT. The point of Kamen Rider Decade was to have multiple words with numerous possibles. It's the prefect excuse to have various series with various takes without worrying about continuity!!
