I DID IT GUYS!! I FINALLY FINISHED KAMEN RIDER DRIVE!!!
What a ride this series was!
Admittedly, I was kind of against with this series from the start. Its humour, the gimmicks and how the episodes were structured, it felt like Kamen Rider took a step back from Gaim and
I will still stand by those claims especially for the first 20 episodes as
It is only from episode 21 onwards was where I felt that the series got genuinely better. Why?
The story became more intricate and complex (comparatively),
Characters started getting developments, the gimmicks/toys took a back seat and became the team's support crew as opposed to being the highlight, and the
comedy was much better integrated!
It felt as though a new team of writers took over! Or at least the writers were finally allowed to shine and not be tied down by the amount of toys they had to write in.
Another thing I was annoyed by during the first 20 is the Reaper's story arc. 'cause all I felt he did was cockblock as much battle he could with little plot progression sprinkled in-between. It felt really dragged out is all I'm saying.
But after we finished with that, the pacing improved significantly.
Its self-awareness is also a thing I wasn't expecting. Like how Gou would acknowledge how cliche the villain is and how the heroes would point out that the baddies (won't say who) aren't the clear-cut villains they thought they were.
The end-game was a little lacklustre imo and I feel that the last episode (the one with Ghost's crossover) was such a waste! I would've used the 2nd last episode as the episode where the baddie won whereby the final would be where our heroes would try to get everyone back while also kicking that final boss's ass I mean can you just imagine how awesome yet depressing it'll be when our heroes walk down an empty street, knowing that everyone is gone?!
Tho that being said, I still enjoyed the finale as it still manages to tug a number of heart strings ;-;
I would also give credit to the Ghost crossover just for concluding Tomari's story arc and giving him his resolve.
But going back to not expecting things. I was really impressed that the writers decided that Gou would be the one that would destroy Gold Drive! I was expecting Drive to be the one while Gou backing him up with him giving the final blow . But to have him alone do it? (tho with a little help from Chase) That was really cool and really gave the fight some emotional weight especially since it was his father.
All in all, would I recommend Drive? FUCK YES! I would even say that the first 20 is worth getting through just for the rest 'cause that's where the shits at! If I were to rate it, I would give the first 20 a 6/10 while episodes after 20, a solid 9/10.
Show managed to beat my expectations by going to directions I was not expecting!
That being said, how'd they manage to fuck up Ghost?!
P.s. Yeah, my some-what review's a mess. I just typed whatever came in mind so bear with me here!!
