If you're new to Hummingbird, welcome (don't forget to introduce yourself)! I encourage you to read over this FAQ as it might save you a lot of trouble and hassle of creating a topic that may have been created over and over again. Feel free to use Ctrl + F key combination to find specific words like, "import" or "pages" to help find answers in a quicker manner if need be.
Let's begin! (As a side note, since this site grows and morphs through updates/fixes, some of these will cease to be applicable, so I'll do my best to cross off these as we go along).
#1. Q: What's the best possible way to know what updates have gone through? Is there a "Change log"? What is being planned?
A: When it comes to Hummingbird, not everything is thrown out there as a big announcement, but instead we like to casually slip in small updates for you. That's not to say things are supposed to be kept "hush hush", but since a lot of smaller things are tweaked and probably don't need special attention, we won't necessarily make a site-wide announcement about it. Don't hesitate to drop a comment on our feeds about it (Josh, Vikhyat, Sai, Cairus, Nuck, Ryn) as we will be happy to inform you what "major" feature/fix we're currently working on. Be sure to also check the Site News forum section and the "Things that are coming soon™ (read before posting a suggestion)" thread.
"There's a lot of ambiguity on what is and is not coming to the site. A big part of that is because, we change our mind often, not because we're fickle but because sometimes (often) we realize our original thoughts were a bit off the mark. In terms of groups, you can expect them to make an appearance, we have a few ideas to really improve upon the concept."-Josh

#2. Q: I noticed the anime pages (example) seem to be incomplete. I can't click any of the characters or their voice actors, let alone see the full cast. There's no OP/ED nor any information regarding what animation studio created such anime. What gives?
A: Given the fact Hummingbird is constantly changing, nothing is set in stone, but this is a good thing. Over time, the pages will go through numerous changes, each update either allowing for more information to be displayed, design fixes, or a combination of both.
#3. Q: Where are the links to sequels/prequels/OVA's/spin-offs on certain pages?
A: Most anime should have a "Franchise" section on the page (i.e. Steins;Gate) that includes anything related to the anime (ordered by release date). If you find that some anime pages are missing such information or display it incorrectly, feel free to report it here.
#4. Q: I don't see any hentai here, is this site really that uptight about keeping mature content off the database?!
A: Absolutely not! By default, adult content is disabled, however, you can enable it if you wish to. Go to your settings (found under Edit Profile), and near the bottom, you will see "Adult Content" with a toggle. Click the toggle and it will switch it to "On" which will then allow you to find/add hentai titles as you please!
#5. Q: Okay, I have an anime list from Anime-Planet or AniDB, can I also import my list into Hummingbird?
A: In short, no. There is one possible workaround however. One method is to first import your A-P list into MyAnimeList and then import that freshly made MAL list via the Hummingbird MAL import feature. In order to do so, read this.
For AniDB, MAL allows you to import your list here. Once you have your MAL list setup, you can freely import into Hummingbird. Remember when importing your list into Hummingbird to keep the original file that MAL spits out. You don't want to extract it or do anything to it, a .xml file will not work, it must be in its original .gzip format.
#6. Q: I noticed the forum profile is different from the main site's profiles?
A: Nothing is wrong, it's simply a work in progress that we will be implementing soon. A connected profile is our goal, we are just focusing on other aspects of the site until then.
#7. Q: What are "Flags"? What is it for? How do I get "Flagged"?
A: Flags are an essential part of having the community and a way for you to help out in keeping things clean around here. Here is a better explanation of what and how you should use the flagging system. If you need a more in-depth look at how the system works you can visit the official discourse forums, specifically this post.
#8. Q: What do I do if I submitted a quote twice? What if I submitted a duplicate quote? What if I misspelled a word? What if I added a quote but is by the wrong character? What should I do if I find a quote that irrelevant to the anime in general?
A: Since it's not possible to edit quotes that you submit yet, the only possible solution right now is to report quote mistakes in this thread. A moderator will be happy to assist you and correct any irregularities.
#9. Q: I noticed some screenshots/screencaps are showing incorrect pictures on the anime pages. Some anime pages have missing screenshots/screencaps. Some need a little more variety. Some show fanart/promotional art/etc. Some do not know have trailers. I also noticed an anime/manga that is missing. How should I report this?
A: Simply go here and report the issue, be sure to follow the guidelines in the first post and provide a MAL link if you're requesting for an addition since this allows us to hook-up the anime/manga to work with our MAL import feature.
#10. Q: Who are the staff members here on Hummingbird?
Joint Site Founders: Josh & Vikhyat
Staff: Ryn, Sai, Cairus, Nuck, Cybrox
#11. Q: Can I add manga? Visual Novels? Light Novels?
A: Manga and Light Novels, yes, Visual Novels, not yet. However, Hummingbird aims to add Visual Novels to the database in the future!
#12. Q: Is there a place where I can chat with Hummingbird members?
A:Yes! Our on-site chat is finally live! here. We are planning to incorporate a lot more into the chat, some things in the works are channels, we're also constantly looking at what should be the proper way to handle embeds so you may see the chat change from one day to the next. It's still an ongoing process, that we intend to continually update as things are necessary.
#13. Q: Hummingbird needs a mobile app for Android and iOS or just an API in general, is there one?
A: Yes! We have Tenpenchii and Colibri for Android. For Windows Phone we have Anitro and for Apple iOS one of our users (@Jigglyslime) is working on an app, found here. However, you can access the API here and make your own with some help from our API FAQ!
#14. Q: I want to have something similar to MAL Updater so I can update anime from my desktop without having to go the actual site.
A: Currently, there is a Mac version made by inket, read more about it here. Taiga has also added support for Hummingbird! We also have a Crunchyroll scrobbler made by the same user who created the Tenpenchii app (@Tempest). As well as other great projects being made by our very own users, which can be found in the Development section.
#15. Q: Much like MAL, I want to join/create clubs!
A: We have implemented a feature similar to clubs, called groups. You can find them here.
#16. Q: Am I allowed to ask/post links to warez (i.e. illegal streaming/torrents)?
A: Absolutely not!
#17. Q: What is Hummingbird's stance on Fansub Groups and Piracy in general?
A: Hummingbird is very openly against piracy. Bringing anime and manga to the US is still a big (expensive) problem and while arguments can be made both for and against, the types of relationships we're looking to have with larger presences in the industry make this stance an absolute requirement.
#18. Q: What are the Forums rules at the current point in time?
A: The Community Guidelines are found here. If you need more advice on specific subject matters, leave a comment in this topic and we'll assist you.
#19. Q: How do recommendations work on Hummingbird?
A: The recommendations as they are don't look at the actual tags of anime at all. At a very high level what's basically happening is that we look at user ratings to figure out which shows are similar to each other. For example, if there are a lot of users who rate Steins;Gate and Fate/Zero similarly, we infer that they are similar to each other.
Then what we do to generate recommendations for you is look at how you rated shows you've watched and give high weights to shows similar to those you've rated highly and low weights to shows you've given low ratings to.
Recommendations based on your completed list take into account what rating you gave to the shows in your completed list. Adding favorite genres will filter out recommendations that belong to the relevant genre. Not interested does not currently affect recommendations other than hiding the show you aren't interested in, but I can't guarantee it will stay this way.
#20. Q: How does Trending Anime work?
A: As of now what happens is that whenever someone adds a show to their list, the anime is given a "vote" and this vote counts towards the show's "trending" score. The trending score has a half-life of one week, so two votes from one week ago are equal in weight to one vote now. Initially each episode viewed would count as a "vote", but that gave an unfair advantage to long-running shows with a lot of episodes.
It still doesn't work too well in my opinion, so I'll probably be tweaking it some time soon to take into account either when the show started airing or the number of episodes.
#21. Q: What does this "Processing" thing that my avatar displays mean? (Example image)
A: It is shown when hardcore resizing action is going on in the background. (If you're curious, the character's name is Yoshiharu Sagara from (The Ambition of Oda Nobuna)
#22. Q: Why is Avatar: The Last Airbender and other cartoons listed on Hummingbird? I thought this was an anime only database!
A: Read the announcement here as well the explanation of why we did so.
#23. Q: Am I allowed to post NSFW content (discussions/gifs/images)?
A: Our policy here is that Hummingbird is and should be accessible to everyone and NSFW content prevents this. We do not allow any sort of NSFW content and it will be removed if it is posted. If you feel like your topic/post was unjustly removed, just PM one of the staff and we will personally deal with your request. As well as explain why it was removed, if it was.
#24. Q: What is this forum software? How do I use it? Any helpful tips to getting used to it?
A: The forum software we use is Discourse it's fairly new software and very much like Hummingbird, is constantly changing and upgrading. This can cause some issues at times, which we try to fix as soon as we are aware of them, but we believe this software is the best fit for our view of Hummingbird. If you need a quick crash course, you can visit a topic made by one of our very own members (@TheBetterRed) here. The topic that was linked should give you an idea of how and what types of code Discourse allows, as well as some neat tricks like the auto-embed feature.
I'll add/edit more later on.
