I think you missed the part where OP repeatedly called the forum and other parts of the site and community "dead" six times (and "killed" once in addition just for good measure). And then where OP posts a screenshot the top two Google search results for a famous anime series, pointing out that Hummingbird doesn't show up and heavily implying that this is a bad thing.
Of course, then again, your idea of an active community apparently includes one that is alive with shitposting (and where by shitposting you actually meant more like insult posting rather than simply posting lighthearted nonsense), so...
If the objective is for Hummingbird to be The Next Big Thing and top MAL in popularity and Facebook for anime fans, then yeah, it's not there yet. Heck, it doesn't even have all of the same features (despite having some alternate features and a much different interface), and the site is basically still in beta. So, yeah, of course it's not there yet. Has it failed? Only if you don't have much patience to wait a few more years before passing judgement.
If the objective is for Hummingbird to be an interesting place to catalog one's anime watching and hang out and chat with some fellow anime fans, then it's doing just fine, and it will do better with some feature improvements and implementations.
Gotta love the delicious irony.
