How to Make a Good Recommendation Thread
So you want some recommendations on finding the next great anime... How can you help others help you?
A descriptive title
One of the most important things you can do is put what you are looking for in the title. If you are looking for romance anime, for example, be sure to include that in the title. Titles such as "I'm looking for an anime" make it harder for the other users to contribute and find their way to your thread.
Genres you like, and genres you want to avoid
If you are looking for a more broad selection, be sure to help narrow down your preferences to some degree. For example, if you are looking for a romance anime, but want it to be shoujo-ai/yuri, be sure to say so. On the other hand, if you dislike those genres, be sure to mention it!
Anime like X
One of the most common and most effective ways of getting suggestions is to give an example of something you enjoyed. This can help other users who liked the same anime pass on other series they enjoyed.
Don't be afraid to mention anime that you did not enjoy, and want to avoid. This can help as well.
This is for when you want to get really specific. Some of the other things you can give users to help them understand your preferences are...
- The kind of characters you like/dislike
- The type of setting you are looking for
- The release date (do you love older anime, or are you only into newer things?)
- The art style (maybe you have a special place in your heart for certain studio's character designs, and dislike others)
- Length (Some people aren't ready to invest in a high episode count, and some may want to avoid shorter anime)
Has someone already made a thread very similar to yours?
Often times, users look for very similar characteristics, leading to multiple threads of the same nature. Of course, every OP is going to have their own tastes and list of completed series, but it is a good idea to look around for similar threads before making your own. Feel free to make your own thread if you do not feel you can find the results you desire in the threads others have been posted previously.
INCLUDE A LINK TO YOUR LIST
This helps other users know what you've already seen. If you have anime in your "Plan to Watch" list that may fit the bill of what you are looking for, that's another good thing to mention. This can help other users give you better recommendations based on what you are already potentially interested in. You may also mention that you don't wish to receive suggestions for anime from your PTW list.
With these tips in mind, we hope the Hummingbird community can help you find your next favorite series.
