Hummingbird has been connecting anime fans for nearly almost four years. In that time, we've seen a lot of competitors come and go, and we've come close to closing our doors as well. One reason for our success is that we have not remained the same platform over the years; we’ve changed and adapted and improved. Yet, our heritage has always been a little double-edged.
One of our greatest short comings has been our availability. Up until now, Hummingbird has been something we've all worked during our free time and without pay. Nights and weekends if we didn't have anything going on, but occasionally we would pretend to not be weebs and dedicate time to friends and family, leaving the platform and its many issues neglected.
I'm happy to say that we've successfully raised enough funding to work full-time on the platform. This is our job now.
With the launch of V3 (Yes, it's really happening) we'll also be rebranding as Kitsu. As far as the name 'Hummingbird' goes - we have a long history. Some of you have been using the site for quite a few years now. As a result, there are a lot of preconceptions of what Hummingbird is. And, interestingly enough, they can sometimes get in the way of what we could be.
We'll be releasing Kitsu (i.e. V3) within the next couple days. It will be heavily Alpha in terms of functionality. Shit is going to break and functionality will be buggy. In spite of that, Kitsu is already a more solid platform to use than Hummingbird currently is. An added benefit to the release is that you'll be seeing as actively making changes and fixes on a daily basis.
Here's a quick rundown of new functionality you can expect to see at launch:
- Global activity feed (browse posts from everyone in the community)
- Replying and liking comments
- Blocking users
- Reporting inappropriate content, spam, abuse, etc.
- Notifications on mentions, likes, replies, posts
- Tagging anime and manga in your posts
- Much better search
- Much better library performance
- Favorite anime / manga / characters
- Revamped quick update
Thanks for sticking with us through the good times and the bad. More formal announcements coming after the soft launch, but I wanted to personally share this with you all in advance.
